Oscar’s reading

December 15th, 2018

We are going with an unschooling approach to our home education at the moment, which is where we follow and facilitate what our children are interested in and encourage them. Therefore, I have not been teaching Oscar how to read like you would in school. It’s probably the thing that I am most worried about whether I am doing right or wrong by him with. Last week we drove past a shop looking at the Christmas lights and he said, ‘Mummy, does that word say closed?’ And I said, ‘Yes, yes it does! How did you know?’ And he said ‘I just did.’ 😊 Since then I saw the word closed on a Lego piece and so asked him what it said and he replied ‘closed.’ Hopefully, he’ll just pick up and learn the words to help him read more and more because he’s showing an interest in it and therefore has intrinsic motivation for his choice to read.
