Industrialism and the death of agency →

December 10th, 2012

Agency is the ability to make a decision, and to be responsible for the decision you make.

This short post from Seth Godin explains agency, and how that relates to who has responsibility for stuff that happens.

As more jobs require knowledge workers, we’ll clearly be disseminating agency to those workers. This is a good thing: more people have the power and responsibility to form the world around them. And we trust them to make good decisions.

rm -rf

December 5th, 2012

Argh! I just rm -rf all my iTunes library. I feel like such a n00b.

The music is backed up (in many places, including iTunes+) and I was in the process of adding Movies and TV shows to a backup, but deleted the wrong copy.

So, me and Caroline have 3 episodes of Battlestar Galactica left to watch on the iPad, and then we’ll have to wait to watch the final season until I’ve managed to recover them.

This is why I love Internet →

It’s also super challenging.

This new network celebrates art, enables connections, helps tribes to form, amplifies weirdness, and spreads ideas. What it cannot abide is boredom.

If you want to write, here’s a blog. Write. Today, writers like Xeni Jardin and Danielle LaPorte reach millions without the blessing of big media.

If you want to sing or make videos, well, sure, YouTube will happily show your work to the masses. Judson Laipply has already entertained more than a hundred million people with his short film — a video that cost exactly zero to film. If you want to share an invention or fund a project or topple a government, the connected economy makes it easier to do that than ever before.

Can you imagine it getting less open? This is just the beginning

It’s a preview of a book by Seth Godin. It’s quite a long preview, though!

Not related to anything at all, but which way up do you eat toast? With the topping down towards your tongue (so you can taste it more), or the normal way? I was just wondering because I mentioned to people recently that I ate toast the first way and they looked at me like I was crazy. →
