First steps of building an online database

January 26th, 2010

I’ve been working on a database for BYP to help me keep track of the people involved with Cinders. I have email distribution lists and release forms to keep track of. It will also be helpful when producing the credits for the film.

I wanted to put the database online so it’s easily accessible (by authorised users). I started with DaDaBik to quickly build a PHP frontend to a mySQL database.

This was fairly straightforward and gives a desktop browser reasonable access to all the data. It isn’t great for repetitive simple tasks, such as ticking off who is in what distribution list. Also the user interface is slow and involves lots of page loads. This is no use when on set, trying to figure out who I need to get paperwork from.

The next step is to produce dedicated webapps that are useful on the desktop and on my iPhone.
