Andrew & Pippa’s Wedding

May 28th, 2012

We went to Matthew’s cousin’s wedding at the weekend. We had a lovely time, with beautiful weather, a gorgeous location, and a very intimate wedding service.

Matthew used his iPad, with iPhoto, to give the photos a quick processing, pick out the favourites, and throw together a Journal, to share with the family at the barbeque, the day after the wedding. They aren’t very high res, but the result was pretty pleasing.

Vanilla Forum

May 9th, 2012

I recently set up a forum using Vanilla Forums, and have to say I’m impressed.

I started with phpbb and found it confusing and ugly. It has a million configuration options, and is probably very powerful, but even adding a new forum is confusing, with lots of permissions settings etc. And the plugin architecture is nightmarish.

I deleted that and had a look for another option. Vanilla Forums is so simple. It’s pretty, and seems to be pretty sensible right out the box. The forum I’ve been using it for is an internal project, with not that much traffic. Maybe it’s simplicity is no good for a busy forum, but the admin side of it is straightforward. It’s easy for users to navigate around. Even the way drafts are saved – it autosaves as you type, and next time you view the page you were adding a comment, everything you’d typed before is ready for you to finish.

Also, turning on Markdown support made me very happy. Since it isn’t well document, I’ll note here: add markdown support to your vanilla forum install by adding the following to conf/config.php

$Configuration['Garden']['InputFormatter'] = 'Markdown';

The big Easter Egg hunt

April 7th, 2012

Oscar found lots of eggs in Covent Garden on his first trip into London. We’ve been on the train & the tube, and had sushi, plum wine and Starbucks. What a day!

Oscar came to work

March 20th, 2012

Oscar visited Daddy at work today and met his team mates. He made a good impression with a consortium of noises, faces and smells.

Where did everyone go?

March 17th, 2012

Oscar’s all set for a night out to see the stars.

Late for work because the train was early!

March 14th, 2012

I’m not sure how this makes any sense. I ran for the train station, made it in plenty of time, but the train had departed three minutes early!

Reminds me of the sketch in Come Fly With Me featuring an airplane that had departed so early none of its passengers were aboard, because the airline was trying to balance out all the late departures.

I was gutted to have missed the first weekend of filming of The Drift but excited about getting stuck in this next week!

Back to work

February 20th, 2012

I was back at work today, having spent two weeks with Caroline and Oscar. We’ve had lots of fun and had lots of visitors. Thanks, everyone for coming to see Oscar and helping with cooking and washing (and also for not overwhelming us!)

Oscar’s still doing really well. He has big sleeps, big feeds and big awake-and-looking times. He’s definitely looking at faces lots recently, and likes looking at black-and-white objects (like the cups you can see in the third pic below.) I can’t tell if he likes cuddles – he seems just as happy lying down as being held. He makes all sorts of funny noises and has lots of faces, but we don’t know what the faces mean.
