Fish, Emperor and our first catch

August 25th, 2010

The jet lag hit us this morning. Although we got a good sleep last night, our bodies were sure we should be fast asleep, so we treated ourselves to a McDonalds brunch. It’s similar to English, but with Teriyaki burgers instead of barbecue burgers, and extra grease. Sadly no rice in McDonalds, despite what we were told before the trip :p

We tried going to the fish market, but it turns out it isn’t open on Wednesdays, but there was still plenty of sushi and markets selling more than just fish.

We’re just settling in for our first night in Japan. The hostel is fantastic. Our own room, with just enough room to sleep, charge our electronics and free wifi 😀

Is there still time to learn Japanese?

August 22nd, 2010

We leave in the morning, but I hope there’s still time to learn some Japanese. Apparently the locals speak very little English, so I’ve downloaded Earworms Rapid Japanese (thanks for the recommendation, Ed)

We’re off!

August 22nd, 2010

We’ve finished last-minute planning and have our flights and some places to stay booked.

I’ll try to keep updates on this blog to let you know what we’ve done and where we’re headed next.

To start, we’ll be flying in to Tokyo. Once there, we’re getting used to the world skipping to 8 hours ahead and eating lots of Sushi.

Simpler comments system

August 20th, 2010

I was watching the most recent TWIT special, which is a collection of young adults talking about entrepreneurship. Most of them entrepreneurs themselves. It was a good, inspiring watch, so check it out at http://twit.tv/specials32.

One of the young entrepreneurs is Joey Primiani, and he’s made a simpler commenting system, that I’m trying out on my blog.

I was using Disqus, but it adds a big blob of busy-ness at the bottom of each post, so I wasn’t too keen on it. Joey’s comment system is clean and simple, but only ties in to twitter. You put your twitter name in, and your comment. It pulls all your details, including your avatar, from Twitter.

HDR taken to some arty extremes.

For those that don't know about HDR, these pictures aren't paintings; they're photos with processing applied to bring out all the details that the eye can normally see in a scene, but a camera would normally fail to capture, and monitor fail to show.
