Jubilee Christmas Party 2011

I’ve borrowed a flash, and this is a shot at a (very dark) Christmas party. I’m pretty pleased that it’s possible to capture a nice portrait, even when it’s pretty much pitch black.

I’ve been reading Strobist, so want to get an off-camera flash. For now, I’m making do with reflecting the flash off something.

Next time, I’ll have to play with the camera more in manual mode, to try and get at least some of the background, and Christmas party atmosphere!

Black Rapid shut down Luma Loop with broad patent

November 12th, 2011

I was sad to read this letter from Luma Labs today. They say one of their competitors has had a patent approved for their camera strap’s sliding connection between the sling and camera. As soon as I read this, I feared it might be my camera strap that is the competitor. Looks like it is; here’s the patent. Luma Labs claim there’s plenty of prior art, such as the US 1885 Carbine sling.

Whether or not the patent is justified, it’s sad to see patents, rather than innovation, used to stifle competition. Luma Labs have discontinued their camera sling, the Luma Loop, for fear of litigation, but have new camera strap designs in the works. I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with in December, and hopefully will be able to replace the camera strap that I’m now going to feel dirty wearing.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Today, we went to see a castle. Sadly, half of it was missing.

I made a quick and dirty panorama with my iPhone of the view from beneath the castle. http://360.io/cPeNUf

Holiday in Northumberland

August 21st, 2011

We're on holiday in Northumberland with Matt's family this week. The sky has been very dramatic for our first night! That's the cottage we're staying in. There's nothing else nearby… Sarah says it's like The Village, Signs and The Happening movies.

PS Sorry about the watermarks – the software is too expensive, so I've made do!

Brick Lane

Caroline and I visited Brick Lane, in East London. We weren’t there on market day, so looking forward to a revisit. We loved the graffiti and the vibe of the place. It’s a bit like Camden Town, but more grungy. It’s not as vibrant, but friendly (despite the grunginess of the area!)
